Background

La Marzocco wanted to create a new version of the Modbar under-counter espresso machine by building upon the electronics and software used in the Linea PB. By leveraging the Linea PB electronics, the Modbar AV was able to include advanced functionality like Scale Integration and an intuitive programming process. While the functionality of the Modbar AV is very similar to a traditional espresso, the decoupling of the coffee boiler and the grouphead results in added complexity in the control systems.

Project
  • Luminaire worked with La Marzocco to define a user experience and interface that followed the standards set forth by the Linea PB while also leveraging the unique industrial design of the Modbar system.
  • Developed and tuned custom temperature control systems by collecting and analyzing data from hundreds of extractions in different environments.
  • After the product was introduced, Luminaire developed a lower cost version of the electronics which could be used in an alternate product offering
Impact
  • The Modbar AV has been well received by customers and technicians alike.
  • Through intentional control system tuning, the Modbar AV has the same temperature performance of traditional La Marzocco espresso machines.
  • Luminaire and La Marzocco have continued to add features to the Modbar AV Firmware over the past 7 years, making it a smart investment for customers.
