Background

Since 2018, Luminaire has served as Nikira Labs’ electrical engineering partner in developing state-of-the-art spectrographic gas analysis systems. During this time Luminaire has developed a modular optical detection, amplification, and FPGA-based data acquisition system from the ground up, providing Nikira with an electronic system that exceeds application noise & bandwidth requirements while simplifying system integration.

Project
  • Designed & validated low-noise, high-gain, high-bandwidth optical sensor amplifiers.
  • Developed the hardware, firmware, and software for a high-speed data acquisition & analysis system.
  • Integrated an FPGA into the data acquisition system to improve system bandwidth and analysis capabilities, and implemented bitstreams for two acquisition & analysis techniques.
  • Developed hardware integrating data acquisition, system actuation, and power supplies for use in Nikira’s products.
  • Developed hardware to integrate the Raspberry Pi Compute Module with additional functionality & connectivity.
Impact
  • Nikira Labs has used the boards and firmware we developed as a platform for multiple products that would not be possible with off the shelf parts.
  • Systems based on this core have been successfully deployed with customers and it is the basis for new products and innovations
  • Our work together has also helped Nikira bid and win multiple grants and government contracts

Project Feedback

Over the past two decades, we’ve collaborated with several electronic design firms to develop custom PCBs. While many can competently translate requirements into designs, Luminaire stands apart as the only firm that delivers truly comprehensive solutions to complex scientific R&D challenges. They take the time to understand our objectives, contribute meaningfully to the brainstorming process, and then design and build boards that exceed expectations. Their exceptional technical expertise and clear communication have earned our trust for more than seven years, during which they’ve been instrumental in developing PCBs for environmental sciences and industrial monitoring. My only hesitation in recommending Luminaire is revealing a hidden gem.
