Background

La Marzocco came to Luminaire with a proof-of-concept prototype for a new milk steaming system. This steaming system represented La Marzocco’s entry into a new product category. We worked together to define a product specification, design custom electronics, qualify components and develop firmware for the end product.

Project
  • Identified the key product requirements and refined the steaming process through collaboration and testing with La Marzocco.
  • Developed custom circuit boards which drive stepper motors, connect with a variety of sensors and are able to run the full steaming process.
  • Wrote and maintained firmware.

Impact
  • We developed new methods to reduce the number of sensors needed, reducing the overall cost of goods for this product
  • During the 2020-2023 chip shortage, Luminaire identified a way to reduce the dependency on an unavailable component while also reducing the overall cost of the electronics. This hardware and firmware was developed in a manner which provided no visible impact to the end customer.
